This happens because of the inclination of the earth’s axis. Earth’s axis is inclined at an angle of 23 and 1/2 degree with its plane.
During winter, the part of the earth below the equator is exposed to the sun fully.it means during half of the revolution of earth around the sun, south poles gets constantly sunlight for six months, while at the same time north pole which is facing away from the sun experiences six month without sunlight.
And vice versa happens during the other half of revolution. That is why poles of the earth experiences six months day and night.
