Leander Paes is the famous professional tennis player. He won several Grand Slams and Trophies in Double and Mixed Doubles game. He first paired up with Mahesh Bhupathi in 1996. In 1998, they reached the semis at three Grand Slams – Australian, US and French Open. By the next year, the duo had established themselves as a force to reckoned with. They reached the finals of all the four Grand Slams in 1999. Of these, they won two – Wimbledon and French Open – becoming the first ever Indian pair to win a Grand Slam and rose to No.1 in the world ranking.

Leander Paes also bagged the mixed doubles event at the Wimbledon with Lisa Raymond. Paes-Bhupathi won the French Open again in 2001 and the gold at the 2002 Asiad in Busan. He won the men’s doubles at the US Open again in 2006 and 2009. In 2009, he also won the French Open. With his victory in 2012 at the Australian Open, he completed a career Grand Slam, meaning he had won all four titles.

Leander Paes was born in Kolkata. Paes won the junior US Open and Wimbledon before turning professional in 1991. Partnering with Ramesh Krishnan, he reached the quarterfinals of the doubles event at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. At the next Olympics in Atlanta, he won the bronze medal beating Fernando Maligeni. With this, he became the first Indian individual medallist since Kedar Jadhav in 1952.

  • Leander Paes won his first and only singles title at Newport in 1998. In the same year, he also beat legendary tennis player Pete Sampras 6-3,6-4 at New Haven. It was their only meeting ever.
  • Paes has won 57 doubles titles, including eight Grand Slams, 13 World Tour Masters events, and six World Tour 500 Series events.
  • Paes’s partnership with Mahesh Bhupathi was so legendary that they came to be called the Indian Express. They have a record of 25-2 at the Davis Cup, including a winning streak of 24. That is the longest in Davis Cup history.
