On March 10, 2017, a new bill for the Amendment of Scheduled Castes was being introduced in Lok Sabha by the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Thawar Chand Gehlot. Lok Sabha passed the bill on March 23, 2017.  The Bill aims to amend the Scheduled Castes Order, 1950 and the Pondicherry Scheduled Castes Order, 1964.

Highlights of Amendment Bill 2017:

  • Amendments to the 1950 Order: The Bill attempts to modify the list of SCs for the state of Odisha. Sualgiri and Swalgiri are the two castes which will be introduced as synonyms to the Sabakhia caste in the list of SCs for the state of Odisha.
  • Amendments to the 1964 Order: The name of the Union Territory of Pondicherry was modified to Puducherry by a central Act way back in 2006.  The Bill attempts to include this change and replaces ‘Pondicherry’ with ‘Puducherry.’
