On 11 August 2017, Prasoon Joshi got appointed as the new Chairman of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) by the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry. His tenure of appointment is for three years. The former Chairman of CBFC was Pahlaj Nihalani.

Highlights of Prasoon Joshi Appointment:

  • The Central Government has appointed Prasoon Joshi with the help of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952 (37 of 1952) read with the rule 3 of the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 1983.
  • Prasoon Joshi has penned lyrics for songs in Bollywood films such as Delhi 6, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, Fanaa, Black, Lajja
  • He received the Padma Shri Award in 2015.
  • He has also received two National Awards and three Filmfare Awards.
  • He has written the lyrics for the theme song of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
  • Joshi is the CEO of McCann World group India and Chairman (Asia Pacific).
  • CBFC (also known as Censor Board) is a statutory body under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Any film can be exhibited publicly in India only after the CBFC certifies it.
